Getting to know: Nancy Guinn with Dog Krazy

Sitting down with and getting to know the powerhouse behind a locally owned, fast-growing dog store that specializes in quality products and services for happy and healthy pets.

Title: owner/president Dog Krazy Inc., a dog supply store founded in Fredericksburg in 2006. It stocks natural products for dogs and cats, such as food and toys, at five locations, including one at 3310 W. Cary St. in Richmond that opened in 2017. The four other locations are in Fredericksburg, Leesburg, and Spotsylvania and Stafford counties.

Born: 1976 at Clark Air Base in the Philippines

Education: “I graduated from high school in 1994. I’ve taken exactly one business class. I’m one of those lucky people who was able to turn my love for dogs into my career. I did decide to get my certification in animal nutrition in 2013. In 2016, I completed a 500-hour course through the Academy of Natural Health Sciences and I am now a clinical pet nutritionist.”

Career: worked in the dental field, 1995 to 2006; Dog Krazy, 2006-present

Where do you live: Fredericksburg

Best business decision: “Choosing to follow my passion and spend my life with my dogs. They mean more to me than anything, and when I say I will only carry products I would give to my own pets, I mean it. If you find it in Dog Krazy, it’s something I feel is safe for my and your pets. I stand my ground when it comes to what I choose to carry. I don’t sell anything and everything for pets. I carry only the best items for pets.”

Mistake you learned the most from: “I make lots of mistakes. But I see them as a learning experience and grow from them. I also try to make sure to not repeat them. The one thing I 100 percent believe in is, do not hire your friends. It always ends badly.”

First job after college: “I didn’t go to college. My first job was at a hair salon. I did go to cosmetology school, but I have carpal tunnel in both hands and couldn’t continue to do hair.”

If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently: “Nothing. I am where I am because of the choices I have made. Five stores later, I have an amazing business I am so proud to call mine, the most loving and supportive husband I could ever ask for, and a house full of dogs and a pig. Life is great.”

Book/movie that inspired you the most: “I have so many favorite books. Marketing books and business books are my weakness. ‘Guerrilla Retailing’ (a book series) gives me inspiration and reminds me that I have to go above and beyond to make it in retail. I am given a lot of books about dogs from customers. ‘Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love’ is a great one for animal lovers or anyone who needs a good cry. Dogs are so forgiving. We can learn so much from them.”

Favorite/least favorite subject in school: Favorite: English; least favorite: history.
